The band have recently been taking requests from the crowd for snippets of covers during their shows.

Over the weekend, Ezra Koenig dedicated a portion of the show towards the end of their set at The Rose Bowl in Pasadena as a “salute to indie” and proceeded to perform a brief series of covers by bands handpicked by the frontman. You can view them below.

He kicked off the section with Phoenix’s ‘Lisztomania’, which the French band performed at the festival last year. The frontman also teamed up with the band at Just Like Heaven last year.

Koenig then launched into Tame Impala’s ‘The Less I Know The Better’. Introducing the track he said: “Now a friend of mine said that Tame Impala’s not an indie band. Well, if my friend is correct, and I’m not sure he is, but if he is correct, you don’t have to be an indie band to make an indie banger.”

Headliners @Vampire Weekend gave a “salute to indie” at @Just Like Heaven last night. The regular covers section of their set was dedicated to fellow blog-rock torchbearers, most of whom had played the nostalgia fest in previous years. VW did bits of “Lisztomania” by Phoenix, “The Less I Know The Better” by Tame Impala, “Space Song” by Beach House, “Two Weeks” by Grizzly Bear, and “Wolf Like Me” by TV On The Radio, who played the song on the same stage a few hours earlier.

The frontman went on to play a snippet of Beach House‘s ‘Space Song’, Grizzly Bear’s ‘Two Weeks’ and TV On The Radio’s ‘Wolf Like Me’.

Rilo Kiley and Bloc Party were also among the artists that performed at this year’s bash.

Vampire Weekend’s performance kicked off their North American tour which will next see them play Boston Calling on May 25. From there, the band will make stops in cities across the US including Portland, Philadelphia, Columbus, Saratoga Springs, Asheville, Jacksonville and Miami.

They will then wrap up their tour with a handful of festival appearances at the likes of Bonnaroo, Pukkelpop, Rock En Seine, Borderlands Festival and more. You can the full list of dates here and visit here to purchase any remaining tickets.

The dates are in support of the band’s most recent full-length release ‘Only God Was Above Us‘.

In a four-star review of the album, NME shared: “Despite its sentimental homages to the history of their hometown, ‘Only God Was Above Us’ isn’t a nostalgic album. Rather than adopting an overly rose tinted view of the past to cope with the present, Koenig seems to be fine with embracing that things just aren’t that great.”
